▶ Custom dashboards

Your dashboard doesn't have to live within a BI tool's limits.

I build management dashboards from scratch with my own code instead of off-the-shelf BI tools. No limits on design, interaction, data sources or calculations; the dashboard is shaped exactly around what your business needs.

There is no chart the tool doesn't support, no source it can't connect to, no calculation it can't do.

What this service actually is

A custom management dashboard is a web application written from scratch around your data and your decisions. Charts, drill-downs, filters, custom calculations, role-based access, mobile views and embedding into your internal portal are designed to fit the need.

It is not configuring a BI tool or filling in a ready-made template. Off-the-shelf tools are good for a quick start, but in design, interaction and calculation you are limited to what the tool offers. A dashboard written in code has no such limit.

The uncomfortable part

An unused dashboard is usually blamed on bad design. Most of the time the problem is what the dashboard was built around.

  • The dashboard shows what the tool can do, not what you need.

When the view you need doesn't exist in the tool, the team either gives up on it or exports the data to Excel and calculates there. The dashboard looks used, but the real work is still done by hand.

  • One dashboard for everyone is the right one for no one.

When the general manager, the sales manager and the planning team look at the same screen, each searches for their own answer in the crowd. Each role makes different decisions and needs a different dashboard.

  • There is a dashboard, but not at the moment of decision.

A dashboard that loads slowly, works only on desktop or asks for a login every time gets opened after the meeting, not in it. Where and when it will be used has to be designed from the start.

I will tell you early which of these applies. If I see your current tool already meets your needs, I will tell you that too.

▶ How I work

  1. Week 1

    Decisions and users.

Who is the dashboard for, and for which decisions? Which metrics, at what level of detail, on which device? The screens are clear on paper before any building starts.

  2. Weeks 2–3

    Data connections and calculations.

Sources are connected, metrics are calculated with one definition, and the refresh schedule is set up. This is where the numbers under the dashboard are made right.

  3. Weeks 3–5

    Design and build.

The dashboard is built with real users in short cycles. Every cycle ends with a working version that is shaped by feedback.

  4. Final week

    Launch and handover.

The dashboard goes live in the agreed environment and access is set up. How it works and how to update it is documented and handed to your team.

▶ When you should not hire me for this

If any of these is true for you, let's not start this engagement:

  • Your current BI tool already meets your needs.

There is no point replacing a setup that works. If the tool isn't the problem, a new dashboard won't fix it.

  • Your team wants to keep changing the dashboard itself.

If a team that doesn't code wants to add new charts every week, a BI tool's self-service features may fit better.

  • There is no reliable data underneath.

Even the best dashboard makes a wrong number look good. The data infrastructure has to be sorted out first.

  • You need a one-off analysis.

For a question you'll look at once, an analysis report is enough, not a dashboard.

▶ Engagement shape

We start with a fixed-scope pilot of 4–6 weeks. If the data situation is unclear, a ~2-week AI & Data Opportunity Assessment first makes clear what is possible.

Scope, users and screens are agreed in writing up front. Where the dashboard will run (your own servers or the cloud) is decided together.

30-day exit
If it isn't working, you can end the engagement with 30 days' notice.

▶ Questions and answers

Why not a BI tool?

BI tools are good for a quick start, but in design, interaction and calculation you are limited to what the tool offers. A dashboard written in code has no such limit: whatever is needed gets built.

Which data sources can it connect to?

Any source that can be accessed: databases, ERP and CRM systems, APIs, Excel and CSV files. The number or type of sources is not a constraint.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. How each screen looks on each device is part of the design.

Does everyone see the same data?

Not unless that's what you want. Role-based access can be set up so each user sees only the data they're allowed to.
